BidMyJob

Our plans

BidMyJob is free for everyone and takes no commission. People reasonably ask how that can last. This page explains how the site pays its way, how it will grow, and when it will start taking people on.

How it pays its way

  • Free for both sides, for good

Posting a job is free, bidding is free, and there is no commission on the work. Charging either side would put up the price of every job, so that is the one thing that will not change.

  • Paid for by local sponsors

Local businesses that supply and support trades, such as builders' merchants, flooring and paint suppliers, sponsor the site. Their banners reach the people who buy from them. Sponsors never bid for jobs, so they never compete with the people using the site.

  • Kept cheap to run

The site is built from scratch and runs on its own server, so the running costs are small. Sponsor money goes back into advertising the site locally, which brings more jobs and more helpers, which makes the site more useful to the next sponsor.

How it will grow

Each stage starts when the one before it is working, not on a fixed date. Growing faster than the jobs can support would leave people posting work that nobody bids on.

  1. Now

    Burnham-on-Sea and the Somerset coast

Building enough people in one area that a job posted here reliably gets two or three real bids. A marketplace that works well in one place is worth more than one spread thinly everywhere.

  2. Now

    The BidMyJob app

An Android app is in testing on Google Play, so job alerts and messages arrive like any other app on your phone.

  3. Next

The rest of Somerset and the South West

Once the coast is busy, the same approach moves outwards town by town: Bridgwater, Taunton, Weston-super-Mare and on towards Bristol. Each new area gets its own local sponsors and its own push to find helpers.

  4. Later

    Honest local prices

With enough completed jobs, the site can show what work actually costs round here, drawn from real local jobs rather than national averages.

  5. Later

Nationwide, one area at a time

The site already works anywhere in the UK. Growing nationally means repeating what works locally, area by area, not spending on national advertising before the jobs are there to back it up.

Working for BidMyJob

Today BidMyJob is run by one person. There are no vacancies yet, but roles will open as the site reaches the point where each one is needed. These are the first we expect:

  • Local area organisers

When an area has steady jobs every day and needs someone on the ground to find helpers and sponsors.

  • Sponsor partnerships

When there are more local businesses wanting to sponsor than one person can look after.

  • Member support

When the number of jobs and messages needs someone answering questions every day.

When a role opens it will be advertised here, with interviews for people who apply. If you would like to hear about it first, send a short message saying which role and which town. No CV needed yet.
