How much does oven cleaning cost?

The dip tank is the difference. Racks, side runners, panels and usually the inner door glass come out and go into a heated tank in the van, where the carbon deposits soften off rather than being scrubbed off.

Meanwhile the cavity is cleaned by hand with purpose-made products, and the door is normally split so the glass can be cleaned on both inner faces — that greasy film between the panes that no amount of wiping from outside will touch.

Expect it to take one to two hours for a single oven, longer for a range. Most operators use products described as fume-free and non-caustic, which is why they can work in an occupied kitchen without emptying the house.

Ask what is included. Whether the hob, the extractor and the door glass are part of the price or extras is the most common misunderstanding.

If your oven has a pyrolytic self-clean function, it heats the cavity to a very high temperature to reduce residue to ash. These ovens are built for that, and they usually should not be cleaned with chemical products at all.

The reason is the cavity lining, which is a special enamel. Caustic or abrasive cleaners can damage it, and doing so may affect your warranty.

A good oven cleaning company will ask what type of oven you have and will decline or adapt the job for a pyrolytic model. If you have one, run the pyrolytic cycle yourself and simply wipe out the ash — it costs nothing but electricity.

Catalytic liners are different again: rough-textured panels designed to absorb grease at normal cooking temperatures. They also should not be scrubbed or chemically cleaned.

Check your manual. It takes two minutes and can save both a wasted booking and a damaged oven.

Honestly, it depends on how bad it is. A lightly soiled oven is genuinely a DIY job with a supermarket product and some patience.

Where professional cleaning earns its money is heavy carbon build-up, the inner door glass, and ovens that have not been touched in years. The dip tank achieves things hand cleaning does not, and it takes an hour or two rather than a weekend.

It is also worth it at particular moments: before a rental check-out, where oven condition is a routine cause of deposit deductions; when selling or letting a property; and when moving into somewhere with someone else's baked-on cooking.

After that, an annual clean keeps it easy. Ovens that get cleaned regularly take less time and cost less than ones rescued every five years.

Combine appliances in one visit. Hob and extractor added to an oven clean cost far less than separate bookings.

Do it before it gets severe. Annual cleaning is quicker and cheaper than a rescue.

Wipe spills when they happen and while the oven is still warm, before they carbonise.

Use a liner or a tray under anything likely to bubble over, but keep it off the oven floor unless your manual permits it, as it can affect airflow and heating elements.

And check whether your oven is pyrolytic before booking anything — if it is, you may not need this service at all.
